No olvidar\u00e9 mientras viva la primera imagen que tuve de B\u00e1rbara. Recuerdo n\u00edtidamente, como si fuera ayer, el miedo con el que cruc\u00e9 la puerta de la UCI neonatal<\/strong> aquel 5 de marzo. Yo hab\u00eda dado a luz hac\u00eda horas, pero el miedo me paralizaba. \u201cTienes que bajar a verla\u201d me animaba mi marido \u201cte vas a tranquilizar\u201d… Mi marido se equivoc\u00f3.<\/p>\n

C\u00f3mo conoc\u00ed a B\u00e1rbara<\/h2>\n

Abrir la puerta de la UCI neonatal es cambiar de mundo. Recuerdo los pitidos. Creo que fue lo que m\u00e1s me impresion\u00f3 al entrar. \u201cPi, pi, pi\u2026\u201d Enfermeras, guantes, m\u00e1quinas\u2026 Yo iba en silla de ruedas porque la ces\u00e1rea<\/a> de urgencia hab\u00eda sido complicada. Mi marido tiraba de m\u00ed y cruc\u00e9 en silencio el pasillo de incubadoras, mirando sin ver y buscando la que ten\u00eda el apellido de mi hija.<\/p>\n

\u00c9l me par\u00f3 delante de una incubadora y, al mirar dentro, no sent\u00ed el amor que corresponde a una madre conociendo a su beb\u00e9; el mismo que sent\u00ed las dos veces anteriores. Tuve miedo. P\u00e1nico. Aquel cuerpo min\u00fasculo, a\u00fan sin\u00a0 formar, lleno de cables era mi hija. Y ese d\u00eda comenzaba una lucha por vivir con final incierto. Despu\u00e9s de un embarazo de riesgo<\/a>, con hemorragias casi semanales; despu\u00e9s de estar 15 d\u00edas con la bolsa amni\u00f3tica rota en reposo absoluto\u2026 despu\u00e9s de mantener la templanza y la fuerza durante aquellos meses, ahora esto. Sent\u00eda que ya no ten\u00eda fuerzas. Y sin embargo all\u00ed empezaba la lucha.<\/p>\n

Me hab\u00eda pasado los 15 d\u00edas anteriores con la bolsa amni\u00f3tica rota<\/strong> en reposo absoluto intentando retrasar el parto<\/a>. Hab\u00edan sido d\u00edas tristes. Sin poder ver a mis otros dos hijos, sin poder levantarme de la cama ni para ir al ba\u00f1o. Y muerta de miedo pensando una y otra vez cu\u00e1l ser\u00eda el final. Las estad\u00edsticas que me daban los m\u00e9dicos eran desoladoras. Pero sin duda aquellas semanas fueron la mejor inversi\u00f3n de mi vida porque esos d\u00edas fueron cruciales para mi hija. Y all\u00ed estaba ella. Diminuta y fuerte, luchando por vivir. \"Beb\u00e9<\/p>\n

Mi peque\u00f1a gladiadora<\/h2>\n

Ninguna madre est\u00e1 preparada para conocer a su beb\u00e9 en esas condiciones. No hay palabras que lo describan la sensaci\u00f3n de desolaci\u00f3n que te invade en esa UCI. B\u00e1rbara: 25 semanas, 800 gramos.<\/p>\n

Lo que yo no sab\u00eda es que aquel cuerpo min\u00fasculo era una gladiadora. La tasa de supervivencia de los grandes prematuros<\/strong> (25 semanas) es de un 90% y solo un 10% presenta secuelas graves.<\/p>\n

B\u00e1rbara ser\u00eda, por m\u00e9ritos propios, una ni\u00f1a feliz y sana. Hoy quiero contar su historia que es la m\u00eda porque creo que es importante saber que los ni\u00f1os prematuros<\/strong> son ni\u00f1os normales. O mejor a\u00fan son \u201canormalmente normales\u201d. Porque mi hija nunca ser\u00e1 una ni\u00f1a normal. Divertida, segura, fuerte, arrolladora.<\/p>\n

El 5 de marzo B\u00e1rbara era min\u00fascula y recuerdo que los primeros d\u00edas a pesar de sus medidas consegu\u00eda arrancarse los cables que la conectaban. Las enfermeras estaban desesperadas con ella. Pero la neonat\u00f3loga me coment\u00f3: \u201cA m\u00ed eso me gusta, ser fuerte es necesario y tu hija lo es, conf\u00eda en ella\u201d. Y lo hice.<\/p>\n

Del miedo a la esperanza<\/h2>\n

El miedo del primer d\u00eda desapareci\u00f3 de repente. Y algo hizo clic en mi cerebro. Mi hija luchaba cada d\u00eda y yo decid\u00ed que si ella no se rend\u00eda yo menos. Y de alguna forma supe que ganar\u00edamos. Las enfermeras me reconoc\u00edan que mi optimismo era sorprendente y contagioso. Y yo la verdad lo pienso ahora y no s\u00e9 de d\u00f3nde sal\u00eda.<\/p>\n

La neonat\u00f3loga me daba el parte cada d\u00eda y nos informaba de los siguientes pasos. Era precavida y hab\u00eda noticias duras casi a diario pero yo segu\u00eda de forma literal el consejo que me dio una mam\u00e1 que hab\u00eda vivido esto: \u201cEl secreto para aguantar es no subir ni bajar demasiado… intenta mantenerte estable, no te ilusiones demasiado cuando las cosas vayan bien, ni te pongas muy triste cuando vayan mal\u00bb.<\/p>\n

Poco a poco, la UCI neonatal se convirti\u00f3 en mi casa. Ese lugar fr\u00edo e impersonal del primer d\u00eda, poco a poco, se fue haciendo amable para m\u00ed. Me pasaba el d\u00eda sentada junto a la incubadora mirando fijamente la pantalla que ya entend\u00eda a la perfecci\u00f3n. Le cantaba, le contaba cosas de sus hermanos y hac\u00eda planes con ella: so\u00f1ando todo lo que \u00edbamos a ver y a hacer juntas cuando sali\u00e9ramos de all\u00ed. Me negu\u00e9 a que mi peque\u00f1a luchadora tuviera a una mam\u00e1 triste. Cada d\u00eda le contagiaba toda la alegr\u00eda que me daban sus hermanos.<\/p>\n

La vida en el hospital<\/h2>\n

Durante esas largas semanas las enfermeras y neonat\u00f3logos se convierten en tu otra familia. Por supuesto tambi\u00e9n las mam\u00e1s, con las que compartes espacio, problemas y penas. Nadie mejor que ellas saben lo que sientes cada ma\u00f1ana al cruzar esa puerta.<\/p>\n

El primer d\u00eda que hice el m\u00e9todo canguro<\/a>, y pude ponerla en mi pecho, sent\u00ed una emoci\u00f3n incomparable. Tocarla como a una hija, por fin, sin un cristal en medio. All\u00ed dentro cada peque\u00f1o paso es un gran avance.<\/p>\n

Fueron semanas duras en las que hice un m\u00e1ster m\u00e9dico. Cada d\u00eda te enfrentabas a probabilidades y palabras nuevas: pa\u00e1lisis cerebral; ceguera; insuficiencia respiratoria causada por la inmadurez de los pulmones; ecogenicidad del cerebro\u2026 Le hac\u00edan las pruebas dentro de la incubadora, delante de nosotros. Recuerdo que yo aguantaba la respiraci\u00f3n en cada una de ellas, intentando interpretar la cara del m\u00e9dico que la hac\u00eda.<\/p>\n

Un d\u00eda, eco de coraz\u00f3n y yo rogaba que tuviera el ductus cerrado. Al siguiente, fondo de ojo y yo ped\u00eda bajito: \u00abpor favor que no sea ciega…\u00bb Y as\u00ed cada d\u00eda\u2026 porque estas pruebas se repet\u00edan a menudo. Que un d\u00eda estuviese bien no quiere decir nada, en un prematuro todo puede cambiar en cualquier momento<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Y, por fin, el alta<\/h2>\n

Pero B\u00e1rbara fue ganando peso. Y ganando vida. Un d\u00eda nos cambiaron de la UCI a cuidados intermedios. Y por fin lleg\u00f3 la esperada palabra: alta. El 28 de mayo de 2015 cruc\u00e9 la puerta del hospital con ella en brazos. Hab\u00edamos ganado. Se lo hab\u00eda prometido, muerta de miedo a una ni\u00f1a de 800 gramos. Y el 28 de mayo me iba a casa con una ni\u00f1a de dos kilos sana y feliz. El destino cumpli\u00f3 su parte y ella la suya.<\/p>\n

Hoy B\u00e1rbara tiene 4 a\u00f1os y un desarrollo f\u00edsico y psicol\u00f3gico absolutamente normal. Me gustar\u00eda que su ejemplo sirviera de \u00e1nimo para todas las mam\u00e1s que hoy est\u00e1n en una UCI y viven con la incertidumbre del final.<\/p>\n
