Pregnancy<\/strong> is a time when you need certain supplements to favour your baby\u2019s development and ensure your own physical well-being. We\u2019ve already talked about essential supplements such as folic acid. Today we\u2019re going to tell you about the importance of iodine<\/strong>, which can also be taken from the moment you decide to get pregnant to ensure you have a sufficient intake.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s it for?<\/h2>\n

Iodine is necessary for our thyroid gland to work properly.<\/strong> Did you know that the thyroid doesn\u2019t develop until after the first trimester of pregnancy? This means that the mother\u2019s thyroid has to work overtime. You\u2019ll therefore need more iodine, which is essential for your baby\u2019s brain development.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Iodine deficiency could result in gestational hypothyroidism<\/strong>, which poses significant risks, including a greater probability of miscarriage, intrauterine growth restriction, hypothyroidism in the baby, subsequent learning difficulties, etc.<\/p>\n

What do the official bodies recommend?<\/h2>\n

The recommendation of the World Health Organisation<\/strong>\u00a0(WHO) is to add a daily supplement of at least 200 mg of iodine to your regular diet. This applies to women who are planning to have a baby, those who are already pregnant and to nursing mothers.<\/p>\n

But it should also form a natural part of our diet. Iodised salt, fish, seafood and dairy milk should all be among the foods we eat regularly.<\/p>\n

As always, your doctor will perform the necessary checks during your pregnancy to make sure your thyroid hormone levels are just as they should be.<\/p>\n
